Who Am I to You?
Whenever we encounter a public figure like the President, Governor, Senator or Congress man or woman and the Mayor, either in person, in the news or read about them some of our opinions about them will be positive, though at times some of them maybe negative. In today’s Gospel Jesus wanted to know from his disciples what was people’s opinion of him: “Who do people say I am”?
The disciples were tactful in telling him only the positive things people were saying about him: “John the Baptist, Elijah, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” Though later texts tell us of the negative opinions like being a drunkard, glutton, a friend of sinners, and worst of all, Beelzebul, prince of devils. But Jesus was more concerned about what his disciples thought of
him. Today Jesus is still concerned about the image we have of him. Peter cooperating with the prompting of Holy Spirit proclaimed He is the Christ, the Son of the Living God. God put this into the mouth of Peter as Jesus confirmed and changed Simon from just one of the twelve to Peter (Rock) leader of the twelve, and one this Rock the Church will be built.
The First Reading, from Isa 22:19-23, telling of the replacement of Shebna as master of the royal palace by a new official, Eliakim, appropriately foreshadows the appointment of Peter in the Gospel.
It seems to have contributed to some of the language in which that appointment is made: notably, the hand-over of keys – and also perhaps the sense that what the new appointee determines (‘opening’ and ‘closing’) will have a definitive higher sanction, not lightly overthrown. Linking the two readings also is the sense of being responsible for a community seen as a ‘building’: while in charge of the palace, Eliakim is to be a ‘father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem’ just as Peter will be the ‘rock’ upon which Jesus will ‘build’ the community of his church. Peters’s leadership of the Church is passed on to his successors as Bishop of Rome, where he made his permanent abode, and suffered martyrdom under Emperor Nero about 64 A.D. The current Bishop of Rome, Pope Francis is the 265th successor of St. Peter and leader of the universal Church. He is therefore Peter among us, the rock on which Jesus continues to build his Church to this day.
The core question for you and I today is “who is Jesus to me”, and what is my image of him, and is my image of him growing or changing. My image of him might be that of the Judge and all powerful universal king, which he rightly is. Is my image of him rooted in fear and punishment? Do I allow the Holy Spirit to help me grow that image to that of a personal friend, protector, healer, consoler and counselor, which he also is. Who is Jesus to you today?
Some House Keeping
- The Parish just took delivery of new liturgical vestments ordered by Fr Coleman. They were blessed after the morning Mass last Monday.
- We hope to allow in person meetings either in the Parish hall with a maximum of twelve persons, or the conference room in the office for a maximum of five persons. To schedule meetings, activities or events using the facilities, please contact Susie Bryson and she will help you reserve the space.
- As an act of charity, please wipe the kneeler and area with disinfecting wipes in the confessional after leaving so that it is ready for the next person.

¿Quién soy yo para ti?
Siempre que nos encontremos con una figura pública como el Presidente, Gobernador, Senador o diputado o diputado y el Alcalde, ya sea en persona, en las noticias o leyendo sobre ellos, algunas de nuestras opiniones sobre ellos serán positivas, aunque en ocasiones algunas de ellas quizás negativo. En el Evangelio de hoy, Jesús quería saber de sus discípulos cuál era la opinión de la gente sobre él: “¿Quién dice la gente que soy?”
Los discípulos tuvieron tacto al decirle solo las cosas positivas que la gente decía de él: “Juan el Bautista, Elías, Jeremías o uno de los profetas”. Aunque textos posteriores nos hablan deopiniones negativas como ser borracho, glotón, amigo de los pecadores y, lo peor de todo, Beelzebul, príncipe de los demonios. Pero Jesús estaba más preocupado por lo que sus discípulos pensaban de él. Hoy Jesús sigue preocupado por la imagen que tenemos de él. Pedro, cooperando con la inspiración del Espíritu Santo, proclamó que Él es el Cristo, el Hijo del Dios viviente. Dios puso esto en la boca de Pedro cuando Jesús confirmó y cambió a Simón de solo uno de los doce a Pedro (Roca) líder de los doce, y uno en esta Roca se construirá la Iglesia.
La primera lectura, de Isaías 22: 19-23, que habla del reemplazo de Sebna como amo del palacio real por un nuevo funcionario, Eliaquim, presagia apropiadamente el nombramiento de Pedro en el Evangelio.
Parece haber contribuido a algo del lenguaje en el que se hace ese nombramiento: en particular, la entrega de llaves, y también quizás el sentido de que lo que determina el nuevo designado (‘apertura’ y ‘cierre’) tendrá un carácter definitivo. sanción más alta, no derrocada a la ligera. Vinculando las dos lecturas también está el sentido de ser responsable de una comunidad vista como un ‘edificio’: mientras esté a cargo del palacio, Eliakim será un ‘padre de los habitantes de Jerusalén’ así como Pedro será la ‘roca’ sobre el cual Jesús ‘edificará’ la comunidad de su iglesia. El liderazgo de la Iglesia de Peters se transmite a sus sucesores como obispo de Roma, donde hizo su morada permanente y sufrió el martirio bajo el emperador Nerón alrededor del 64 d.C. El actual obispo de Roma, el Papa Francisco es el 265o sucesor de San Pedro y líder. de la Iglesia universal. Es, por tanto, Pedro entre nosotros, la roca sobre la que Jesús sigue construyendo su Iglesia hasta el día de hoy.
La pregunta central para ti y para mí hoy es “quién es Jesús para mí”, y cuál es mi imagen de él, y es mi imagen de él creciendo o cambiando. Mi imagen de él podría ser la del juez y rey universal todopoderoso, que con razón es. ¿Mi imagen de él está basada en el miedo y el castigo? ¿Permito que el Espíritu Santo me ayude a convertir esa imagen en la de un amigo personal, protector, sanador, consolador y consejero, que él también lo es?¿Quién es Jesús para ti hoy?
