Dear Parish Family,
The feast of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, was established by Pope Pius XI in 1925, not long after the end of the First World War. The pope established the feast as a statement of faith against the prevailing ideologies of communism and secularism at that time. The two ideologies attempted to exclude faith, religion and God from humanity. This feast is even more relevant to us now that we face many anti-Christian and anti-Catholic ideologies like secularism, materialism, relativism, anti-clericalism, and persecution of Christians. By celebrating this feast, we are upholding the teachings of the Scripture, the teachings of the Church and to continue to proclaim Jesus Christ as our leader and king.
Great works of art and literature like Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel and Dante’s Inferno reminds us as the Gospel of today does of the final judgment when Christ comes again to judge our world from creation to the end. The image of the all-powerful, punishing divine king stands in contrast with the image of God as shepherd in the first reading and the responsorial psalm of
the Shepherd who goes after the lost sheep. Both are correct, Jesus Christ is the good Shepherd who lays down His life for His sheep, but He is also the Universal King who will judge between those who have compassion and see the face of Christ in others and those who do not.
The kingship of Jesus is clearly stated in the Scripture: The King of kings and Lord of lords (1 Timothy 6:15); the ruler of the kings of the earth (Revelation 1:5); he is the Lord of lords and King of kings (Revelation 17:14). Jesus declared in Matthew 28:18, “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me.” In Philippians 2:9-10, St. Paul writes, “God greatly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, of those in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord…” May Jesus Christ rule over every aspect of our life.

La fiesta de Nuestro Señor Jesucristo, Rey del Universo, fue establecida por el Papa Pío XI en 1925, poco después del final de la Primera Guerra Mundial. El Papa estableció la fiesta como una declaración de fe contra las ideologías predominantes del comunismo y el secularismo en ese momento. Las dos ideologías intentaron excluir la fe, la religión y Dios de la humanidad. Esta fiesta es aún más relevante para nosotros ahora que nos enfrentamos a muchas ideologías anticristianas y anticatólicas como el secularismo, el materialismo, el relativismo, el anticlericalismo y la persecución de los cristianos. Al celebrar esta fiesta, estamos defendiendo las enseñanzas de las Escrituras, las enseñanzas de la Iglesia y continuamos proclamando a Jesucristo como nuestro líder y rey.
Grandes obras de arte y literatura como la Capilla Sixtina de Miguel Ángel y el Infierno de Dante nos recuerdan, como lo hace el Evangelio de hoy, el juicio final cuando Cristo regrese para juzgar nuestro mundo desde la creación hasta el fin. La imagen del rey divino todopoderoso y castigador contrasta con la imagen de Dios pastor en la primera lectura y el salmo responsorial del Pastor que va tras la oveja perdida. Ambos tienen razón, Jesucristo es el buen Pastor que da su vida por sus ovejas, pero también es el Rey Universal que juzgará entre los que tienen compasión y ven el rostro de Cristo en los demás y los que no.
El reinado de Jesús está claramente establecido en las Escrituras: El Rey de reyes y Señor de señores (1 Timoteo 6:15); el gobernante de los reyes de la tierra (Apocalipsis 1: 5); él es el Señor de señores y Rey de reyes (Apocalipsis 17:14). Jesús declaró en Mateo 28:18: “Se me ha dado toda potestad en el cielo y en la tierra”. En Filipenses 2: 9-10, San Pablo escribe: “Dios lo exaltó mucho y le dio el nombre que está sobre todo nombre, para que al nombre de Jesús se doble toda rodilla, de los que están en el cielo y en la tierra y debajo de él. la tierra, y toda lengua confiese que Jesucristo es el Señor… ”Que Jesucristo gobierne sobre todos los aspectos de nuestra vida.
